According to Nike Designer Christian Tresser, the Air Max 97 was inspired by the ripples formed by drops of water falling into a pond. The elemental upper rests on visible air cushioning technology. The Air Max 97 was the first shoe to achieve a full-length visible air cushion, which paved the way for future innovations in sneaker design. 

In 2019, NIKE gave six local designers from around the world the chance to design a sneaker to represent their prospective cities: Paris, New York, Seoul, London, Tokyo and Shanghai. This light blue Air Max 97, designed by Cash Ru of Shanghai, is meant to evoke clouds floating in the sky. Its upper consists of overlapping layers of translucent blue mesh with white accents. Minimal branding in red adds a pop of color.
